Having a conversation with some people is like golfing, you hit your ball, they hit theirs. With Mel it’s tennis, you talk and he talks right back at you.
His Pictures are a lot like that. He reacts with humor, irreverence, annoyance, and delight to the world around him.
Each day brings new confrontations. I’ve joked with him that his successes are based on the curves of probability and the law of averages, plus I’m sure he picked all the wrong pictures for this book, but Mel’s worst is equal to the best by others.
His images have immediacy, joy, and chutzpah which can be translated as guts, balls and a completely overbearing sense of gall.
He approaches life as a battle, but not a serious one, and a joke, but a sympathetic one.
Each image takes a brief encounter and turns it into a fixed memory to be savored at your leisure.
